What is Derive?

Published 10/9/2026, 12:53:05 PM

Derive is a decentralized, self-custodial derivatives protocol for trading on-chain options, perpetual futures, and structured products. It was formerly known as Lyra Finance — the LYRA token migrated 1:1 to the new DRV token (snapshot taken May 8, 2025). [Source: https://docs.derive.xyz/docs/lyra-to-drv-migration.md] It is built from three layers: Derive Chain — an Optimistic rollup on the OP Stack, secured by Ethereum mainnet, governed by the Derive DAO; Derive Protocol — smart contracts creating the decentralized derivatives protocol; and Derive DAO — governance by DRV token holders. The protocol's core components are Accounts — user-held ERC-721 NFTs that house cash, derivatives, and base assets; each account must subscribe to a manager — and Risk Managers, which govern the margin requirements of subscribed accounts. [Source: https://docs.derive.xyz/docs/overview-2]

DRV token utility includes: 25% of protocol fees allocated to DRV buybacks (executed monthly); earning staked DRV by generating protocol fees via trading or depositing collateral into vaults; fee discounts for DRV stakers; and governance of the Derive DAO. [Source: https://legacy.derive.xyz/drv]

Market data (approximate, possibly stale): DRV price ≈ $0.51, +37% over 24h, market cap ≈ $514M (structured data timestamp appears stale — last_updated around Jan 2025 — while a CoinMarketCap snippet showed $0.4501; treat exact price as approximate).. Notable context: In May 2025, Synthetix contributors proposed acquiring Derive via an SNX-for-DRV token swap (~$27M), aiming to integrate Derive's options, perps, and structured products into its ecosystem. This was a proposal — whether it completed is not confirmed by my sources. How the options protocol works

Derive offers European-style options and cash-settled perpetual swaps. Trading runs against a per-user smart-contract wallet on the Derive Chain, so collateral stays in the user's custody while orders match through the venue's orderbook. The modern (v2) execution model is notable: margining, settlement, and permissioning are defined in the protocol, compiled into a RISC-V binary, and proven off-chainwith the SP1 Hypercube zkVM. Protocol operations are batched and submitted to Ethereum L1, where each batch is verified with a PLONK SNARK proof. This gives sub-millisecond matching and a CEX-like experience while every operation still follows on-chain protocol rules. Withdrawals pay out as soon as their batch is verified on L1, subject to withdrawal rate limits. [Source: https://docs.derive.xyz/getting-started/introduction.md]

Trading flow (per Gate Learn): account creation → asset collateralization → order matching → risk assessment → position updates → on-chain settlement. [Source: https://www.gate.com/news/insight/cryptocurrency/238]

Caveats: The exact current price and TVL/volume figures should be confirmed against live data — my structured tool returned stale timestamps, and I could not retrieve the full protocol whitepaper (PDF returned "Not found") or the complete Gate Learn article body. The "90-95% of onchain options volume" figure is a promotional claim from a YouTube source, not independently verified.
