Timeline
| Event | Date |
|---|---|
| Official Announcement | June 11, 2025 |
| Shutdown Date | July 1, 2026 |
| Claim Window Closes | December 31, 2027 |
The shutdown was officially announced by Polygon Labs on June 11, 2025, with the chain scheduled to permanently shut down on July 1, 2026. The zkEVM sequencer will run for 12 months post-shutdown, with forced transactions permanently enabled so users can exit at any time. [Source: https://forum.polygon.technology/]
User Migration Options
For EOA Wallet Holders (Individual Users)
- Before July 1, 2026: Withdraw assets using normal bridge/withdrawal mechanisms to Ethereum or Polygon PoS
- After July 1, 2026: Funds have been migrated to Ethereum L1; claim via https://ui.agglayer.dev/
- Connect the same wallet used on Polygon zkEVM Mainnet Beta
- Claims are executed entirely on Ethereum L1
- No action required on zkEVM itself — exit snapshot was taken at sunset
For DeFi/Protocol Users — Critical Warning
| Fund Type | Status | Action Required |
|---|---|---|
| EOA wallet funds | Recoverable | Claim via ui.agglayer.dev |
| DeFi protocol funds | PERMANENTLY LOST | No recovery possible |
| Multisig wallet funds | PERMANENTLY LOST | No recovery possible |
| Bridge-locked funds | PERMANENTLY LOST | No recovery possible |
"If you had funds in a DeFi protocol on zkEVM and did not withdraw before July 1, 2026, those funds are not recoverable." [Source: https://ui.agglayer.dev/]
Gap Note on Claim c2: While EOA wallet holders have clear migration options, users with funds in DeFi protocols, multisigs, or bridges have NO migration options after shutdown. Any assets locked in smart contracts at the time of sunset cannot be claimed. [Source: https://ui.agglayer.dev/]
For Protocol/Team Migration
- Migrate to Polygon PoS (main chain remains operational and unaffected)
- Migrate to other L2s (Scroll, zkSync, Base, Arbitrum, Optimism)
- Apply for Transitional Grant Support via Polygon Community Forum
Fund Safety Assessment
| Aspect | Status |
|---|---|
| EOA wallet funds | Safe — migrated to Ethereum L1 |

Bottom Line
If you hold funds in an EOA wallet on Polygon zkEVM: Your funds are safe and can be claimed via ui.agglayer.dev until December 31, 2027.
If you have funds in DeFi protocols or smart contracts: You must withdraw before July 1, 2026 — after that date, those funds are permanently unrecoverable.
What remains open: The specific TVL amounts affected and the number of active DeFi users impacted have not been publicly disclosed. Protocol teams with significant TVL are encouraged to contact Polygon via the contact form for transitional support options.
