What is bridge TVL?

Published 10/11/2026, 12:26:58 AM

Bridge TVL (Total Value Locked) is the dollar value of assets held in a bridge's smart contracts — the funds users have deposited to move between chains. For Starknet, the canonical bridge (StarkGate) locks assets on Ethereum and mints the corresponding representation on Starknet. Per DefiLlama, the Starknet Bridge currently holds $474.18m in TVL, up 160.8% over the past 30 days, with 100% of that value sitting on Ethereum (https://defillama.com/protocol/starknet-bridge).

It's important to distinguish two related but different numbers:

  • Canonical bridge TVL ($474.18m) — assets locked in StarkGate's contracts on Ethereum.
  • Total bridged TVL on Starknet ($1.224b) — the full stock of cross-chain assets accessible on Starknet, including third-party bridges and natively minted assets. Of that, own tokens (STRK) account for $810.92m, stablecoins $160.93m, and canonical bridge assets just $69.99m (https://defillama.com/bridged/starknet).

Why does it matter for Starknet?

1. It's the security/trust anchor. L2Beat tracks "Total Value Secured" (TVS) rather than raw TVL, because what matters is how much value is protected by the rollup's security assumptions. L2Beat lists Starknet at $586.07m TVS (+24.2% week-over-week), broken down as $357.10m canonically bridged, $144.18m natively minted, and $84.78m externally bridged (https://l2beat.com/layer2s/projects/starknet). The canonically bridged portion is the most secure because it inherits Ethereum's security via the validity proof; externally bridged assets carry additional trust assumptions.

2. It's a proxy for adoption and capital inflow. Rising bridge TVL signals real user demand and liquidity arriving on the network. Starknet's TVL "has tripled from its bottom and doubled since the BTCFi era began" (https://www.starknet.io/blog/how-starknets-q3-paved-the-way-for-bitcoin-decentralization-and-the-future-of-crypto), and The Defiant reported Starknet as the sixth-largest L2 by value secured with TVL up 200% since its local bottom (https://thedefiant.io/news/blockchains/starknet-token-outperforms-as-tvl-climbs).

3. It underpins DeFi composability. More bridged liquidity means deeper pools for lending, perps, and DEXs. The composition of bridged assets is telling: USDC ($152.71m), WETH ($44.27m), ETH ($42.68m), EKUBO ($41.5m), SOLVBTC ($37.2m), and WBTC ($33.1m) are the top bridged tokens (https://defillama.com/bridged/starknet). The presence of native USDC and Circle's CCTP (launched per Nansen's H2 2025 report) removes the need for wrapped tokens and enables 1:1 transfers with 18 other chains — a structural improvement to how bridge TVL flows in (https://nansen.ai/post/starknet-h2-2025-report).

4. It's a competitive benchmark. Among canonical bridges tracked by DefiLlama, Starknet Bridge ranks #5 by TVL, accounting for 5.8% of the $8.174b category — behind Arbitrum Bridge ($3.59b) and Optimism Bridge ($809.8m) but ahead of zkSync Era txBridge ($117.79m) (https://defillama.com/protocol/starknet-bridge). This is a direct measure of how much capital trusts Starknet's bridge relative to rival L2s.

Caveats and counterpoints

  • Bridge TVL ≠ total network value. The $474m canonical bridge figure is much smaller than Starknet's broader DeFi TVL and its $742.36m STRK market cap (https://defillama.com/protocol/starknet-bridge). A large share of bridged value is "own tokens" (STRK), which can inflate the bridged-TVL headline without representing external capital.
  • Security is not uniform. Only the canonically bridged portion fully inherits Ethereum's security. L2Beat flags that 17.4% of Starknet's TVS carries "additional trust assumptions compared to the tokens involved and the Stage assigned to the project's canonical messaging bridge" (https://l2beat.com/layer2s/projects/starknet).
  • The narrative is evolving. Starknet is exploring a shift from L2 to L1 for post-quantum security, with 2027 as the technical target — a move that would fundamentally change what "bridge TVL" means for the network (https://thedefiant.io/news/blockchains/starknet-weighs-layer-1-shift-to-pursue-quantum-security-by-2027). This is directional exploration, not a confirmed timeline.

Bottom line

Bridge TVL matters for Starknet because it is simultaneously (a) the security anchor that determines how much value is protected by the rollup's validity proofs, (b) the clearest on-chain signal of capital inflow and adoption, and (c) a competitive yardstick against other L2s. The recent surge — bridge TVL up ~161% in 30 days, TVS up 24% in a week — reflects the BTCFi push and stablecoin infrastructure (native USDC/CCTP) that have made Starknet a more credible destination for cross-chain capital. Note that the "tripled from bottom" growth narrative comes primarily from Starknet's own blog and Nansen's report and is not independently corroborated in the sources gathered.
