What is Starknet?

Starknet is a decentralized, permissionless Layer 2 validity rollup (a ZK-rollup) that scales Ethereum by bundling thousands of transactions off-chain and settling them on mainnet using STARK-based zero-knowledge proofs. Its official docs describe it as "a decentralized, permissionless Layer 2 (L2) validity rollup that scales Ethereum by utilizing STARK-based zero-knowledge proofs to bundle thousands of transactions off-chain for verified settlement on the mainnet" [Source: https://docs.starknet.io/learn/protocol/intro]. It is built by StarkWare, which pioneered STARKs — StarkEx was the first L2 validity rollup as a SaaS platform before Starknet launched as the permissionless general-computation version [Source: https://starkware.co/blog/starknet-internet-of-tomorrow].
Three technical differentiators stand out:
- Cairo language: developers write in Cairo, a purpose-built language for STARK provability, rather than Solidity/EVM [Source: https://starkware.co/starknet].
- Native account abstraction: "On Starknet, accounts are smart contracts, a model known as native account abstraction" [Source: https://docs.starknet.io/learn/protocol/intro].
- STRK20 privacy framework (2026): Starknet has pivoted into a privacy-centric hub. STRK20 lets any ERC-20 token on Starknet be used privately with encrypted balances, plus private swaps and transfers, and a fixed privacy cost of 4 STRK per transaction [Source: https://www.starknet.io/blog/starknet-v0-14-2-the-privacy-engine-arrives; https://www.kucoin.com/news/insight/STRK/6abf608538a264000792318c]. It also launched strkBTC to bring shielded transactions to Bitcoin [Source: https://news.bitcoin.com/starknet-develops-strkbtc-to-bring-shielded-transactions-to-bitcoin].
How does it compare to other L2s?
| L2 | Rollup type | Token | Price | Market cap | 24h Δ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starknet | ZK / validity rollup (STARKs, Cairo) | STRK | $0.0719 | $533.5M | +25.97% |
| Arbitrum | Optimistic rollup | ARB | $0.1789 | $1.21B | −2.15% |
| Optimism | Optimistic rollup | OP | $0.1230 | $283M | −0.04% |
| zkSync | ZK-rollup | ZK | $0.0131 | $142M | +9.12% |
| Base | Optimistic (OP Stack) | none | — | — | — |
| Polygon | PoS / aggregated | POL | $0.0994 | $1.06B | −0.85% |

Ecosystem TVL (TokenTerminal) shows Starknet trailing the majors: Base $13.0B, Arbitrum One $5.8B, zkSync Era $4.1B, OP Mainnet $435.6M, Starknet $175.8M [Source: https://tokenterminal.com/explorer/projects/starknet/metrics/ecosystem-tvl]. So Starknet is a smaller-ecosystem L2 by locked value, but it is the only one of the group offering native on-chain privacy as a core feature.
Key strategic differences:
- Security model: As a validity rollup, Starknet posts cryptographic proofs (no fraud-proof challenge window), unlike optimistic rollups (Arbitrum, Optimism, Base) which rely on fraud proofs and a dispute period. This is the fundamental ZK-vs-optimistic tradeoff.
- Unique staking model: STRK validator power is weighted by both STRK and BTC stake, giving Bitcoin holders a role in securing the network — a differentiator vs. single-token staking on other L2s [Source: https://docs.starknet.io/learn/protocol/intro].
- Privacy positioning: STRK20 is Starknet's 2026 bet to differentiate from EVM L2s, targeting stablecoins (USDC) and DeFi with compliance built in [Source: https://www.gate.com/news/detail/starknet-launches-strk20-privacy-token-framework-balancing-compliance-and-19379943].
STRK token snapshot (2026-10-09): price $0.07189, market cap $533.5M, FDV $731.5M, 24h volume $1.68M, +25.97% in 24h, circulating supply 7.42B of 10.18B total [Source: https://etherscan.io/address/0xca14007eff0db1f8135f4c25b34de49ab0d42766]. Note the ~27% of supply not yet circulating implies future unlock overhang relative to free float.
Security note: The canonical STRK Ethereum contract (0xca14007eff0db1f8135f4c25b34de49ab0d42766) passed the honeypot simulation (risk "low", no flags, 0% buy/sell/transfer tax, not a honeypot), but the automated check flagged the specific Uniswap V2 WETH-STRK pair for low liquidity (~$30.7K) — this reflects a thin DEX pair, not a token defect, given the $533M market cap and major-exchange listings [Source: https://etherscan.io/address/0xca14007eff0db1f8135f4c25b34de49ab0d42766]. Separately, the search surfaced a BNB-chain "STRK" listing at $110.39 with a $110B market cap that is almost certainly a fraudulent token — avoid it.
Bottom line: Starknet is a technically distinct ZK/validity rollup (Cairo, STARKs, native account abstraction) that in 2026 has repositioned around native privacy (STRK20, strkBTC). It competes with Arbitrum/Optimism/Base on the optimistic side and zkSync on the ZK side, but currently has the smallest ecosystem TVL of the group (~$175.8M vs. Base's $13B) and a smaller market cap than Arbitrum and Polygon. Its differentiation is privacy and cryptographic rigor rather than raw TVL or DeFi volume.
Limitations: TVL figures come from a single aggregator (TokenTerminal) and may differ from DeFiLlama; I did not independently verify throughput/fee data, which would strengthen the comparison.
